Mapleton High School Profile
2025-2026
Mapleton Community
Mapleton, Oregon is a rural community nestled in the beautiful coastal forest range near the Pacific Oregon Coast. The town is unincorporated and has a current population of approximately 500 people. It serves several small communities including Deadwood, Swisshome, Tide, Cushman, Brickerville, Green Leaf and Tiernan. While rural, the Mapleton area is well known for its spectacular rivers and streams, outdoor recreation, and close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and Oregon Dunes. It is also within an hours drive to higher learning opportunities including the University of Oregon, Bushnell University, Pacific University (satellite), New Hope Christian College and Lane Community College (LCC). Also nearby is Oregon State University and Linn-Benton Community College. There is a vibrant art and theater community in the Mapleton/Deadwood area as well as in Florence, Oregon, a 15 minute drive from Mapleton. The Mapleton area has, for many years, been a leader in environmental conservation and has led the way in research related to stream, riparian zone and wetland restoration. Mapleton has an active community library, school booster club, and Lion’s Service Club.
Mapleton High School
Mapleton High School is a COGNIA accredited public school with a dynamic staff and governing school board made up of five individuals who represent the various surrounding communities. School board policy follows state rules and regulations and is closely aligned with the Oregon Department of Education. Currently Mapleton Jr./Sr. High School serves a population of approximately 89 students. Though small, opportunities for Mapleton students abound. Students are provided with honors and college level classes, excellent modern school facilities, after school athletics, clubs incorporated into the regular school day, and extra academic support provided during the regular school day and on Fridays. Mapleton has a strong reputation in the coastal area and several students do travel from surrounding areas to attend Mapleton for its smaller environment with personalized learning and attention. While offering a standard college preparatory education, students have the opportunity for project based learning (PBL) built into their daily schedule. The current offerings in PBL include the areas of business, computer science (electronics), gardening, construction, culinary, and muliti-media communications. During this period the students work in teams, practice real-world problem solving, learn relevant curriculum and skills, and engage in community work. Community engagement is a valued component of the work that our teachers and students complete. At the end of the senior year, students complete a capstone project that incorporates research, speaking and presentation skills, and job shadowing. Mapleton has a seven period day and students attend four days per week (Monday-Thursday). Due to the four day per week schedule, the school day is longer for students beginning at 8:10am and ending at 3:48pm. Mapleton meets all state “seat time” requirements. On Fridays, Mapleton transports students to the school for academic support as needed. Certified teachers are available during this time as well as an EA. Students frequently use this service to work on group projects and improve academic performance.

Also, in partnership with the University of Oregon, Duck Link is an academic program for selected seniors to take U of O courses when they have exhausted all available course offerings in a subject area in high school. Students receive University of Oregon credit and may add it to their high school transcript.
