Curriculum Update words

Health & Math Curriculum Updates

K-12 Comprehensive Health Education Plan
We have adopted new instructional materials for Health instruction. Elementary grades (K-5) will implement The Great Body Shop, which includes many home communications and connections. 6th-8th grade will use Goodheart-Willcox' Comprehensive Health Skills for MS textbook along with approved units for first aid/CPR, mental health, human sexuality, and substance use prevention. High school will use a combination of similar resources for their course.

All lessons and resources have been outlined in our new K-12 Comprehensive Health Education Plan, which is available on our website at both the About Us-District Plans section and under the Families Tab. Additionally, this will be sent out through ParentSquare to all families along with a Google Form for questions and feedback. Additionally, we will have curriculum available for families to look through at our Open House BBQ Night on Wednesday September 10th from 4-6pm.

Elementary Math Pilot
All elementary classes will be piloting Bridges in Mathematics, 3rd edition. This includes four 60-minute lessons each week plus a 20 minute Number Corner routine that provides skill-building practice revolving around the classroom calendar. We will send regular communication about topics home throughout the year and resources will be available for families to look through at Open House.

Family and Community Resources

Cell Phone Rules have changed
Cell phones and personal devices must be off and stored in a backpack or locker during all school hours. Please see updated rules sent through ParentSquare post and shared with students on the first day of school. Families, please help us enforce this expectation by calling the office when you need to contact your student.

HOOTS Clinics
HOOTS will again be hosting two clinics each week (Tues & Wed) for MS/HS students. Clinics are always free, confidential, voluntary, and available to all students. Clinic teams include a crisis worker and an EMT or RN, services are HIPAA compliant, and HOOTS can provide short term counseling, crisis intervention, basic first aid and community referrals. Youth can meet with a professionally trained crisis counselor and an EMT or RN to discuss their needs and options. The team is there to provide extra support to students on a range of topics such as: mental health, physical health, accessing resources, school life, home life, interpersonal relationships, family relationships, substance use or abuse and more.

Wrap-around Resources
If your student or family needs support with food, clothing, housing, counseling, or other resources, we have many partnerships that can help. Please contact our Community Coordinator, Rosie Golden at rgolden@mapleton.k12.or.us or call the front office.

Family and Community Resource Center
Stay tuned for an October calendar of Community and Family programming in our newly refloored Middle School building. We will be surveying community at Open House and through ParentSquare to identify learning and recreation workshops of most interest.

Questions to Ask Your Student About School
This year, we are focused on communication and opportunities to further family connections to student learning. As such, we wanted to start the year off by sharing a set of questions to support your student talking about their school day. How was school? can often lead to a short answer - here are some ideas for various ages to get them to tell you a little bit more.

  1. Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday.
  2. What do you wish you learned today?
  3. Tell me about a story you read/listened to.
  4. What was the most challenging thing you did today?
  5. What’s a question you still have about what you learned today?
  6. What made you happy and proud today?
  7. What was hard for you today?
  8. When you are stuck in class, what helps you move forward?
  9. What would you change about today if you could?
  10. What are you most looking forward to tomorrow?
Good School Attendance Means Success in school and post-secondary poster

Attendance Matters

Regular attendance means attending school 90+% of more, which means no more than one absence every three weeks. Our district goal is for 75% or more students to be regular attenders. Regular attendance leads to school and future success. Thank you for your support of regular student attendance!

Upriver Farmer's Market

Our students and staff have been hard at work this summer tending the garden and running our Upriver Farmer's Markets. We are grateful to our many vendors (produce, baked goods, clothing, jewelry, artwork, and more!) and the many community members who have visited and shopped. We also have a family resource booth with activities for young children, snacks, and information for community connections.

There are two more markets this season, Thurday September 3rd and 17th from 1-5pm in front of the middle school building. Please help us spread the word to make these our biggest markets yet!

If you are interested in vending, please contact Kamari Moeller at kmoeller@mapleton.k12.or.us

SNAP Benefits COMING SOON
We are excited to share that in the next round, our market has qualified to accept SNAP benefits for fresh produce.
