Mapleton School Board Announces
Hiring of the District’s New Superintendent
The Mapleton School District Board of Directors is pleased to announce the hiring of the District’s new superintendent, Sue Wilson, who will lead the District following the June 30, 2022 retirement of long-serving and highly-regarded Superintendent Jodi O’Mara. During a thorough and extensive search conducted by Dr. Krista Parent of the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators and Dr. Kathleen Rodden-Nord of Human Capital Enterprises, the Mapleton School Board engaged the staff and the community in defining the Profile of the Ideal Superintendent. After considering and interviewing multiple well-qualified candidates, Ms. Wilson’s hiring was unanimously approved by the School Board at a meeting on April 20, 2022.
Ms. Wilson has been connected to Mapleton through her role as Director of Student Success at Lane Education Service District, where her team supports the sixteen Lane County districts with community engagement and continuous improvement that increases academic success, addresses inequities, and increases student mental and behavioral health supports. Prior to this position, she worked as Curriculum Administrator in Eugene 4J and as Applied Math and STEM Specialist for the Oregon Department of Education. Her thirteen years as math, physics, engineering, special education teacher, and basketball coach in Phoenix, AZ sparked a passion for community connected school models. She studied Biochemistry/Biophysics at Oregon State University but entered education through a love of coaching and working with incarcerated students. She earned her M.Ed. in Secondary Education and then in School Administration. Born and raised in Phoenix AZ, she always knew she would move back to Oregon. Sue, her husband Jon, and their two boys (9 and 11) live in Eugene and are usually found watching and playing sports.
Sue sees Mapleton as uniquely positioned to become a model rural community school district. The large art/fabrication space, aquatic center building, proximity to nature and towns, and the love and commitment of the people to the region and each other are assets that make community connected learning possible. The close partnership with the Lane ESD will continue, providing students, educators, and families increased access to resources and opportunities often less available to small, rural communities. Sue is committed to ensuring every Mapleton School District student is safe, welcome, supported, and challenged to learn, grow, and meaningfully contribute to the Mapleton community. She can’t wait to get started!
