Comments Regarding Gym Floor

Still like the Salty on the right..not the Buff one! That would open doors for a lot of discrimination. IF Salty absolutely has to go, I suggest just the Letter M with “Home of the Sailors” I would ask that the Board Please consider Putting Salty on a Wall or somewhere though that will help ease the pain of the community seeing him leave.Thank you.

Please keep it the way it is , do not change it.

I like the category 3 one. Home of the sailors with the M

I’m class of ’61 I like the idea of the anchor for the floor (we didn’t have a picture on the floor) my sister (class of ’67) likes the Salty that is second in the row. number 1 is just too ugly;

I do not think that any of the floor designs really describe our school too well. All of the ones that are not too discriminatory are not really related to the school a whole lot. For instance, we are the “Sailors”, not the “Anchors”. And yes, anchors are slightly related to sailors, but when you look at an anchor, do you immediately think about sailors? Same with the battleship. When most people look at a picture of a battleship, the first thought that comes to mind is not the sailors. By picking either of these, it just alienates the mascot even more. At least with the pictures of Sailors, we are keeping the “Home of the Sailors” alive. But, since those could cause discrimination, the only ones that really work are the text only M, and the Mon the ship’s wheel. But yet again, the ships wheel is more related to ships, as is “Unsinkable”, and so is moving towards ships more than sailors. Really, the only one that could work is the text only M, but, just having an M on the floor is just a little bit impersonal. For instance, when a player is on the court, and they look down at an M, how are they going to relate? The least you could do is have the full name of Mapleton. But to be honest, I do not believe that any of these relate with all students, while still keeping school spirit through the mascot. But, that is just the opinion of one person. Please consider, and know that as a whole, the students are very excited for the new floor.

I like Category 4. I agree with the comments on the Sally portrayal – no short shorts
Thank you

Johnny Sundstrom – Two-masted schooners, like on the school stationary used to come all the way up to Mapleton to pick up lumber from the mills along the way. They were mainly taking it to Bay Area in the years following the 1906 earthquake that destroyed SF. Back Street was the main street and the businesses all faced the river. The Sailors would stop over in Mapleton and probably have a good time, waiting for the tide to take them back down river. That design would embody history and sailing and not be gender specific.

I like the ship idea, but it needs to have sails on it. I think the locker room doors need salty and sally on them. That would solve all issues at one time.

Graduated in 1946 so am a few generations removed from todays cultural thoughts. However, will point out that we were proud SAILORS in those days and not referred to with any specific name. I do not know where the use of SALTY originated — but I think that is not an essential part of the logo – I had 32 years of U.S. Naval service and can tell you that the persons in the Navy are first and foremost SAILORS without regard to identifying them as being masculine or feminine-I believe using the term SAILORS is gender neutral.

I’m a Mapleton alum (class of ’74). The existing “Salty” logo has always been good enough for the school and changing it because of rampant political correctness benefits no one. Leave “Salty” just the way he is!

Please keep salty the same as it is

Category 4 updated salty. As an alumni I request that salty continue to be on the gym floor.

I say keep Salty and ad Sally to make it equil

A Sailor is a Sailor it’s all inclusive

I like the idea of having a female and male Salty character. I feel they should both be names Salty though. Sally is gender specific and Salty is not. No reason for them to have two different names. Also, both should wear salior uniforms. There’s no reason to have one of them in shorts and one of them and pants. If there sailors, their sailors. Women in the navy wear the uniform. Having a male and female version of Salty, dressed alike, is a great idea! Having a depiction of both of them, maybe holding arms up in a sign of unity and victory, would look great on the gym floor.

I think that the Sally and Salty should go on the gym floor. Those others are garbage. A muscle man salty for real, come on. And the just some stupid ship, that’s not salty. Then just an “M”, again not Salty. Then with SUPERMAN “S”, let’s not even go there. This is really childish and asking a bunch of children to come up with the logo of a school is ridiculous. I vote of Sally and Salty to be put on the gym floors not on the locker room doors only.

I see no issue with the current mascot on the gym floor, being a sailor is universal. It would seem that too many people are wanting to change who we as Alumni of Mapleton High are. We are strong, we are anchors of our respective communities, & most of all we take pride in being Mapleton Sailors. The Sailors who are very proud of the Mascot that is currently & should always be there, showing our fighting spirit & giving homage to John Gay the designer.

why should we change what has been there since my father morley lindsey graduated and many other salty has been there for at least 80 years, we dont have to be like everyone else..LETS JUST ME MAPLETON SAILORS AND STAND TALL AND STRONG i loved growing up in mapleton and miss it to this day..please leave salty on the floor and put sally on the girls gym door but put a skirt on her.. put salty on the guys gym door.. that would be enough… thanks for the memories….

I believe you should leave “as is” or go to a logo with a “M” or MHS. The way the world is turning you may have to change it again with another yet “gender identity” that’s “politically correct”. Just talked to someone who had to sit through a class on learning how/ what pronouns to use for different gender types….. includung “furbies”. Don’t know spelling and it’s no joke….look it up!

Time for an update…..love the anchor and what it stands for.

We have always been Sailors! It is a sad country when gender is a problem with a school mascot!

The mascot on the right is my choice. It is closest to the current Salty. I think Salty should remain the school mascot.

How about just an anchor????? with Mapleton Sailors over or under it??? Does not denote male or female and would last for years????? New logos and all that goes with them cost money!!!! “Just because someone thinks it needs to be up-dated?” Or just leave Salty alone, I didn’t even know about Sally until this all came up and I have been here off and on since 1972.
Thank you

The Salty Mascot on the right is fine, as are the separate logos for the boys and girls locker rooms. I’d personally like to see the faces resemble Julie Hall and Jerry (Bucky) Rarick, two student-athletes who died about 1969 or so. Bucky’s image was used on the front of the Football program for years. Julie had just been elected GAA Vice-President when she passed away. Itr would be a nice tribute.

As an alumni of Mapleton High School (1986) I love the Salty that is currently painted on the gym floor. I believe that Mr. Gay painted it there during the years that I was at school. As a female, never felt excluded or unrepresented because Salty was a guy. But times change and people are now more aware of inclusion, and just because something is the way “it was always, or always done” doesn’t make it right or mean that it shouldn’t change. These kids that currently attend Mapleton High School have as much a right to have a logo that represents them and makes them feel represented and included. Personally, I would love to see the the logo on the gym floor touched up and new representation of Sailors and Salty added around the school.

LEAVE SALTY AND SALLY ALONE!!!! Sad sad commentary on the state of this world today… Chaos and Meyhem must reign?! Why? Why is it wrong for there to still be small town values and home town pride? Is the consensus that we should start early teaching our chilren and grandchildren that traditions are meaningless and pride has no merit? Exactly as is stated… no one has SPECIFICLY said anything about offense, nor demanded to change something that has been part of a community for decades. So why is all of this necessary if not to continue to manifest chaos where none need exist? Furthermore, when this subject was brought up when I was in middle school (between 1991-94) it caused such student outrage that there was talk of protest and walk out and a bunch of other things. My hope is that students, parents, teachers and the community will continue to hold on the the things that make Mapleton a great place to be from and that wearing the White and Blue of Salty and Sally will be a source of PRIDE for generations to come!

I am in full support of changing the mascot to be more inclusive. It is encouraging that this discussion is happening to reflect the current times we are living in. To say something is “tradition” is not enough, in my opinion. In fact, if we say “that’s the way it has always been”, then that is even more reason to question it. In resisting change, progress can be prevented. I believe the priority needs to be that ALL students feel included and represented. And changing the mascot has the power to do just that.

Hello friends of Mapleton High School,
I am a fellow graduate from the Class of 2000. I have been following this story about our mascot Salty and Sally and am thankful for an opportunity to voice an opinion.
What seems as such an insignificant thing as a mascot, becomes a larger issue when we open a case for change. The passion, pride and nostalgia involved in one’s alma mater, is something not to be ashamed of. MHS is a place that represents a jumping off point for many people’s hopes and dreams, a place that is even more special considering how rural and tight knit this community is.
So, I suppose the question to ask is not “How do we change Salty and Sally?” Rather, “Who are Salty and Sally?”
If we turn to history, one can see they represent the men and women of WW2. The young people of our nation that stood up and ventured out to fight for a world standing up against hate and genocide. Sally could have been a young nurse helping to save lives, or even worked in a factory that built ships. Perhaps Salty survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor? Or stormed the beach at Normandy ? Do the young people of Mapleton know and understand the significance of that generation of people? Do they know that these men and women were children themselves, who turned into heroes when the nation needed them?
What if rather than a complete change of direction in mascot representation, we create a story, and in that story a greater understanding of why they are mascots to be proud of. Perhaps Sally can be wearing clothing that represents her role as a comrade and supporter of her fellow Sailors. Or even stylized more as a “Rosie the Riveter” character. Has it been suggested to characterize them as animals in sailor costumes? What if we contacted Nike, or the University of Oregon and asked for funding and support to place the iconic Oregon Duck in sailor blues? How wonderful would it be to modernize their faces and colors using a local graphic artist, and create a story of these characters so that all can be proud to be represented by their smiling faces.
Salty and Sally come from “The Greatest Generation.” A generation of people that are few and far between in this modern era. I feel we should continue to honor that strong history by simply updating who they would be today. If it truly is a question of gender neutrality and cultural representation, placing a large “M” in the middle of the gym floor seems fair and honorable to the community and students.
Thank you for your time, and good luck on your decision! Mapleton Proud!

Yes, but I agree that Sally should be wearing something more like a short cotillion style dress.
And Salty needs to be wearing Carharts and not some “disco-pants”.
Are there any proposed sketches with antlers?
